What's wrong with Engineering

Engineering has been most attractive stream for Indians in last decade. Engineering in India's education is like sugar in tea. There are more than 2300+ colleges already offering engineering degree and 100+ colleges opens every year. There are some good engineering colleges which focus on quality education from the beginning, you can find list of Engineering colleges in India.

Why engineering is so attractive subject in India?

I think it is not a very difficult guess. Industry growth and growing need of engineers is the reason for this growth.

Is there anything wrong about this growth?

Nothing is wrong in this growth of engineering colleges and students but quality of engineering has been suffering and that is impacting outcome. As a result, thousands of engineers who couldn't inculcate quality during engineering are jobless. Given the status of their degree they are against taking low profile jobs.

How do we solve this?

In recent past new training institutes have come up who are offering training to improve quality in engineers. Colleges should inculcate such training in their courses and motivate their students to perform better.

In my opinion engineering colleges should hire good quality faculty and make sure that students are getting what they came for. Good engineering is not only a requirement but a must factor for country's growth. I would love to see these engineering colleges competing with each other in quality.

Engineering students should also start focusing more on projects then securing marks. Good practical knowledge would help them in innovating. Innovation is very important for a country's growth and social revolution. Innovation should focus on the problem's country face and should make impact to poorest people. Engineering is best way to get started for innovation. It opens up many dimensions of knowledge. But all this would need significant efforts by government, colleges and students. Students should take this challenge their self and come up with ideas of improving their education. If needed they should loop in appropriate teachers who would like to see a shining India.

In order to summarize I would say people in India are living in best of times. People are going through the best time in history where we know growth is inevitable. People just have to put some more effort and grab it.
